Alicia was born on December 1, 1936, in Rockdale, Texas, the oldest of three daughters to Bonifacio Tovar and Rosalia Ybarra. Paternal grandparents were Faustino Tovar and Paula Machado; maternal grandparents were Enrique (nee Araujo) Ybarra and Ernesta Duque. The Lord took her home as she slept on October 22, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas.
Alicia married Graciano Guerrero on August 19, 1955. They had seven children and divorced on March 1, 1972. As a single parent, Alicia worked as a seamstress and then as a shipping clerk for a military insignia company. Later, she worked as a dietician at a hospital and nursing home. She married Jose C. Martinez on June 6, 1973 and separated shortly thereafter.
Alicia enjoyed conjunto music, reading mystery and true crime novels, watching game shows, sewing, knitting, and gambling. Remembering the hard work of migrant farming while growing up in Rockdale, she stressed the importance of education to her children. She did not want that as a life for them and set an example. She returned to school and earned her high school diploma as part of the Sidney Lanier Class of 1981. The example worked.
Alicia is preceded in God’s grace by her parents, half-brother Onecimo B. Tobar, sister Rosita Lopez, daughter Rebecca Guerrero, sons Graciano Guerrero Jr., Daniel Guerrero, Ernest Guerrero and grandsons Steve Medina and John Eric Guerrero. Her legacy includes Rose Marie (Willie) Galindo, Manuel (Belinda) Guerrero, Rachel (Raul) Rodriguez, 15 additional grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She is also survived by sister Paula Torres and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
