Clarence Carter

Clarence Robert Carter passed away from a short but courageous battle with cancer on March 17, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. Clarence was a devoted husband and caregiver to Bonnie, his wife of 62 years, who preceded him in death on December 28, 2015.Clarence is survived by his children Joan Carter, Patricia Holman and husband Richard, and Mark Carter. Clarence was preceded in death by his son James Carter. Clarence has five grandchildren who cherish him: Millicent, Lauren, Robert, Charlotte and Kyle. Clarence was born the youngest of five children on June 27, 1930 in Hutsonville, Illinois to Charles and Ruth Carter. In 1951, Clarence began a rewarding career in the United States Army. He married Bonnie McKimmy on February 27, 1954. Clarence served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1972. During his military service, Clarence was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Clarence was a devoted and wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by many. Clarence enjoyed fishing, trains, gardening and was a master-of-all-trades. Clarence never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. A funeral will be held on March 24, 2016 at 9:00 AM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home 7735 Gibbs Sprawl Rd., San Antonio, TX 78239. All are welcome to attend and help celebrate Clarence's life. Burial with full military honors will take place at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery following the service. The family would like to thank all the caregivers and staff at Parklane West Healthcare Center and Northeast Baptist Hospital for the excellent care Clarence received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in Clarence's name.
