Weda Watts

Weda Pugh Watts, age 87, of San Antonio, passed away in the late afternoon hours of Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the Vitas Inpatient Unit at Santa Rosa.  Weda was born on June 1, 1933 in Elkhart, Texas to the late William Pugh and Gertrude Irene Coleman Grigsby.

She married Floyd Bennet Watts on April 3, 1994 in Pointblank, Texas.  Together they have spent the last 26 years closing out their working lives, enjoying retirement and living a lifetime of memories.  Some of their favorite memories were spent travelling and playing the slots at the casinos along the way.

Weda was the living definition of an individual who grew up during the Great Depression.  She was a member of what we call “the Greatest Generation”.  Weda was a kind woman with a big heart.  She gave of herself monetarily to her church, serving as a board member and eventual President of her HOA, and of her time to her grandchildren’s schools and many charitable organizations throughout her life.  Weda was a member of the Woman’s League and a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church.

As kind as Weda was, she was as equally stubborn and outspoken.  Very few ever left a room that Weda didn’t speak her mind if she didn’t like what was going on.  She had a knack for pinching pennies.  For years to come her family will find dollars and loose change in random places – it might be a drawer, a bag stashed in a closet or even the glove box of the car, but whenever Weda had some change, she was sure to put some away.

Weda was one of a kind.  She was a lady in every sense of the word.  She would never leave her house without her hair and makeup fixed, she loved the beach but didn’t know how to swim, and she loved to travel but didn’t enjoy flying, so she drove everywhere she went.  Weda enjoyed life and all it had to offer.  From travelling to hot air balloon festivals to succeeding despite the odds in her professional life. When Weda and Ben began travelling by RV, they refused to stop at any camp that did not have a golf course attached or nearby.  Weda and Ben were walking 18 holes of golf and competing in tournaments until well into their 70’s.

Weda worked for oil and gas companies most of her life. Weda started as a secretary and worked her way up over the years to eventually started her own company. She was on the board for the NADOA, from 1984 until working her way to serve as President of the Board in 1990.  Weda was also a Texas Delegate to the Republican National Convention.

Weda was a hard worker and successful at whatever she put her mind to but very humble about the things she’d amassed, as she knew the monetary part of life was never as important as the journey to get there or what you did with it once you earned it.

Weda is survived by her husband, Bennett Watts; daughter, Rebecca Henson; grandchildren, Anne Darrow, Cody Brooks and Dustin Brooks; great-granchildren, Zaira Keaton, Wyatt Boehm and Harley Boehm; and by a host of other relatives and very special friends.

She was also preceded in death her sisters and brothers: Ruby Louise Steadman White, Nancy Ruth Fulmer, D.B. Grigsby, Coleman Grigsby, and Claire Lois Grigsby.
