Oscar Garcia, Sr.

July 19, 1962 — November 23, 2022

Oscar R. Garcia met his Heavenly Father on November 23, 2022. Although Oscar did not complete his education at Southwest High School because he was eager to begin his career and own his own restaurant. Oscar enjoyed his passion for cooking for forty years.

His first job was working alongside his father and grandfather, which taught him excellent work ethic. His first official job in the food industry was as a short-order cook at Ninfa’s. Oscar progressed to cooking at several French and Italian upscale restaurants. Although he was never formally educated, Oscar was blessed to be trained by a French Cuisine Executive Chef while working at Sonterra Country Club. In spite of how fulfilling his work was there, after five years Oscar realized the demands of this job were too challenging since his family had grown and the work consumed too much time.

Warm Springs Hospital offered an opportunity for a more favorable work schedule, and Oscar chose to move forward. He made many friendships while there but the most life changing was when he met Norma, whom he made a life with for twenty-five years. Although Oscar was happy there his skill for networking again presented an opportunity and he advanced to Texan Heart Hospital after ten years at Warm Springs.

Because Oscar’s highly respected reputation preceded him, Texsan hired him as the first Executive Chef. This was quite a compliment considering the facility had just opened its doors. After five rewarding years, Oscar was blessed again with a change to work at Coronado Care Center. Throughout his seven years, Oscar was encouraged to become more creative in the types of meals he had become popular for. His commitment and excellence were again recognized, and he was eventually promoted to Executive Chef, which was his title upon retirement in 2020.

Oscar was a deep-thinking man with big dreams. In 2005 he started a mobile ice cream business. He drove his van through the neighborhood and often gave the children free treats. This brought him much joy and he continued this for two years before he and Norma moved to Schertz, Texas.

In 2010 Oscar became interested in training for the Rock-N-Roll City marathon. He ran in five races until 2014. He loved his family and parents greatly and did much to provide for them. Oscar was a humble, Christian man who will be very much missed by all those whose lives he touched through his kindness, humor, generosity, and love.

John 3:16-17

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
